The Stepford Wives: Makes Me Wanna Kill Someone

The Stepford Wives: Makes Me Wanna Kill Someone

Ive seen bad movies. They usually inspire nothing more than indifference or boredom. But sometimes. Sometimes a bad movie is so awful, so offensive to my sensibilities as a film-goer that it transcends being merely bad and metamorphoses into some kind of nightmarish object of pure spite aimed directly at me. Rarely have I encountered something that seems to beg for me to hate it. But until a few days ago, I hadnt seen the remake of The Stepford Wives. Shhh don't tell anyone how shitty th

Hollywood Hit Men - Cinematic Assassins

Part of the Hollywood Hit Men Series - Ive been a movie junkie my entire life. During the many homeless years budgets didnt allow theater visits and lack of a home means lack of wall outlets to plug in such niceties as televisions or VCRs and DVD players. But that didnt mean the itch for filmed entertainment went away. Instead, the itch was scratched by books about film - biographies, novelizations, and film surveys. However, one cinematic genre survey I never stumbled across (an

Tsotsi - Gavin Hood

The fact that the most touching stories come from some of the most chaotic places has almost become an established fact now in the world of cinema. So when a passionate and visionary filmmaker by the name of Gavin Hood from South Africa decided to make a movie on redemption, he was bound to make the world sit up and take notice. His Tsotsi, is not merely a thriller about a criminals transformation, it is a deeper realizations on part of a man, whose life is as much a turmoil from within, as

Jokingly Chilled

The past week, I have watched a slew of movies, starting with War of the Dragons, a Korean-made show which saw me yawning 10 minutes into the show. I wont even bother to elaborate, simply because there is nothing to elaborate. Dont watch this one if you havent. I rate it 2/10. Then there was Wanted starring Angelina Jolie and no one else (I mean who cares who the other actors are). It was definitely nicer than WOTD but in the end I still yawned, basically at the shallowness of the plot

I am a huge Abba fan and having watched Mamma Mia on stage three times (so far) I was really looking forward to watching the movie. I know a lot of people think Mamma Mia is about Abba but actually it isnt. SBS played an old science fiction movie, Outland on TV last night. This is a kind of space western staring Sean Connery. The interesting thing that struck me while watching the show was the way future technology was presenting in the film. One was the very seventies LED style displays:

In Bruges

In Bruges is supposed to be a more than decent flick. Well, call me picky, but I disagreeas is often the case. Sure, the actings goodjust dont expect to hear any Dutch, the music is satisfactory and, once in a while, youll see some interesting camera action. But none of that can make up for the fact that the films premise is terrible. Just. Terrible. In brief, this Irish hitman accidentally shoots a child, so by some weird code, he himself must be eradicated. So his boss or whatever s

CULT MOVIE REVIEW: Things to Come (1936)

One of the pioneering "fathers of science fiction," author H.G. Wells (1866-1946) published a visionary chronicle of the future in 1933 entitled The Shape of Things to Come. As fascism rose across a continent like a dark tide, as economic depression savaged our nation, this stirring, creative (and fictional) account of world events from 1933 to 2100 offered the detailed imaginings of a committed Anti-Marxist socialist; one who accurately predicted many elements of our world today. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay Unrated DVD Review August 3rd, 2008 My roommate and I were there on opening night to watch Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay in theaters. The movie, packed full of racist jokes and pokes at stereotypes (primarily against Indians/Arabs/Asians, with a few black jokes sprinkled in as well), was pretty funny, especially since the theater was 75% Indians and Asians, or at least Indian-Americans and Asian-Americans. It wasnt as good as the orig

Before I go into the biggest Chinese and English movies of the summer, let me just say that Sunday is not a good day for sushi. Of course I know this already, yet I still did it. Inagiku, only known as one of the best in town, was disappointing. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt due to the day for now. On to the movies. I'm not going to lie. I love Batman. He is my most favorite super hero. I think it's because he's super rich and has some dope toys. I also think it's because he's just man. You know what I'm saying. But back to The Dark Knight. I am really not sure why we didn't see this right away. Mostly, I'm not i

Both were pretty formulaic, but the second was somewhat surprising in its exact subject matter. Pleasantly so. SemiPro is showcasing Wil Ferrels declining career. Never Back Down a modern day Karate Kid?

Movie Room Reviews recently posted its review of July 29th DVD release Never Back Down, which features a brilliant young cast and an eerily similar storyline to that of the classic 1984 movie Karate Kid, which starred Ralph Maccio, Elizabeth Shue and Pat Morita. The parallels are unmistakable but the action, music, and intensity of Never Back is certainly more modernized, including the underground world of Mixed Martial Arts, which makes the basic karate learned by Daniel LaRusso seem tame.

Movie Review - Rocky Balboa

Soundtrack Sample: Rocky Theme Rocky Balboa remains one of the most enduring of all screen icons, alongside Rambo, the Terminator, and perhaps John McClane from Die Hard, to have been born out of the 20th Century. Sylvester Stallone was nominated for a screenplay and acting Oscar for the original film, which won 3 overall at the end of the night (Directing, Editing and Picture) and launched a successful career for himself. Whereas the years have been kind to almost all our aging action stars

Lost Boys: The Tribe - 2008 - P.J. Pesce

This was never going to reach the expectations of the prequel. Angus Sutherland replaces his elder half brother as a vampire and Corey Feldman was convinced to reprise his role. All in all, matches Lost Boys in look and style. Not a cult classic like the first one, but not offensive. Brian Murray

Batman: The Dark Knight (Movie Review)

I don't go and see a ton of movies in theatre. Ask me about music, I'll have all the answers you're looking for. Movies I don't pay attention to. Do you know there's a cartoon Star Wars movie coming out? I didn't. But I digress... Here's my movie review for The Dark Knight. Is this the ending? No? Okay, then this must be the ending. No? Hmmm. Well Heath is pretty good in this... but Oscar worthy? Hmmm. Okay, this is the ending now right? Why couldn't they have just ended things at Batman Retu

Top Ten Childrens Videos of the Summer, 2008

This summer, I have some great childrens videos to share with you. I hope you enjoy them as much as my little viewers did-or even as much as I, the adult, did. Step Brothers (Movie Review)

Unlike Dark Knight (see below) the time in the theatre seemed to go by quickly. I'm not some huge Will Farrell fan like some people are, and I sort of thought this movie was going to be pretty stupid. Much like when I saw Dark Knight the day before, I was getting in for free thanks to some peeps with all the hook-ups, so if this movie really stank, we could have walked out having lost nothing but time. With that said, this movie was pretty fucking hilarious. A few times I found myself thinkin

Costners Swing Vote

Been a long couple of weeks. Went on business travel at the end of the month, got home and was pretty much wiped, which meant an entire weekend spent pretty much asleep in my bed. Kinda funny, my internal voice was having an argument with my conscience over whether or not to get up and be motivated. Found my way out of the house a couple of times, but it was too bleepin hot, so the crawl back in bed voice won. This, much to the chagrin of my lawn which desperately needs my attention..

A Very Special Love Movie Review

Last night we went to Mall of Asia to watch A Very Special Love the movie starring Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz. It may sound Baduy, but i dont really care at all. Actually we bought two tickets to also watch The Mummy Part 3. A movie marathon last night! The movie of Sarah and John Lloyd was actually not a boring type of Pinoy movie. The typical story between the rich guy and poor girl again proved an effective story line. Sarahs acting was surprisingly very good. The 20-year old
